Motorbike handed over to boost Blairmont police’s crime fight

At a simple handing over ceremony, SMC Chairman Hutton Griffith said the committee decided to purchase the bike after the then magistrate Nigel Hawke had commented that the station needed two bicycles for the ranks.

Members of the Blairmont Police Station SMC and police officers pose with the motorcycle at the handing over ceremony.

He said that at a meeting held subsequently it was decided that two small 110 motorcycles “wouldn’t cost much and that the money can easily be raised. At that said meeting $24,000 was donated to the cause.”

Additional funds were also collected through a raffle and donations by businesspersons and entities including, Mohamed Shariff, Mr Alvin Chowramotoo, Mr Bisham  Samaroo, J Suenarine, Danan’s Gas Station and Ally’s Bakery of Cotton Tree Village, The Rosignol Fishermen’s co-op and Stretch ‘D’ Dollar Supermarket.

Griffith said the cost of the motorcycle is $150,000. The committee has $85,000 remaining and would “continue to pursue the possibility of purchasing the second” bike. The committee is also planning to purchase a standby generator for the station.
