Miner charged over Turtle Creek ganja find

A Puruni District miner was yesterday remanded to prison on the accusation that he had 242 grammes of marijuana in his possession in a bag at Turtle Creek, Mazaruni River.

Alberto Grant appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

Attorney Adrian Thompson, who represented Grant, told the court that on the day in question there was a gold shout, which resulted in many people flooding to the area. After a raid was conducted by the police, who were summoned to the scene, a bag was found containing the marijuana and his client was subsequently charged.

However, Prosecutor Stephen Telford said that the marijuana was found in Grant’s possession in a bag which he tried to conceal between his legs.

Grant was later remanded to prison. The matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrates’ Court for January 5.
