Armed bandits rob Grove goldsmith, workers

– cops hold two, seize car

A goldsmith and his employees yesterday were left traumatised after three armed robbers posing as customers robbed them of a quantity of cash and jewellery.

Munesh Narine, 53, of 142 Grove said he and three of his employees were working in his workshop located behind his house when three men, who he said appeared to be in their early 20s, walked in and demanded gold and money.

According to Narine, the men took away his workers’ personal jewellery and cell phones and cash along with the jewellery in the workshop.

Before the men left, they discharged one round in the air.

According to eyewitnesses, there was a car waiting at the head of the street through which Narine lived.

A police press release said that the car was later intercepted at Agricola, East Bank Demerara where two suspects were held.

The men, the release said, are assisting with the investigations while the car has been detained as well. Ann Narine, the goldsmith’s wife, said that she was upstairs at the time of the robbery.

The woman said she realised that her husband was being robbed when she heard the gun shot. By the time she went to inquire, the men had already made good their escape, she related.

Ann said she later learnt that the men had difficulty finding their house. They had turned up at the neighbour’s house before being directed next door, she said.

The Narines said they are grateful that no violence was used during the robbery and their home was not invaded. Although still reeling from the incident later in the afternoon when they spoke with this newspaper, Narine said that he will continue as a goldsmith a job he has been doing for some seven years.
