The Muslim community hosted its annual programme to mark the December 7 start of the Islamic New Year 1432.
According to a press release the programme was hosted by the Muslim Youth League of Guyana, the Guyana United Sadr Islamic Anjuman and the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex (ACIC) for the 14th successive year.
Guyanese Muslim scholar Mufti Nazim gave the feature address at the programme, which is now a major function on the calendar of events for Muslims in Guyana. Minister of Labour Manzoor Nadir also attended the event which featured the singing of qaseedas, the reciting of messages, Quranic exhortations and children’s items.
The release said the lunar Islamic calendar began in calculation after the migration of the Prophet Muhammad to Medina.
The first month of the calendar Muharram is significant to Muslims, particularly the 10th day (Ashura) which is observed with fasting, prayers and special programmes at various mosques.
