A miner accused of attempting to stab another man to death was yesterday remanded to prison by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Keron De Freitas, of Ideal Road, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, was charged with inflicting several stab wounds to Nowdatt Persaud on November 15 at Soesdyke, with intent to murder him. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge of attempted murder.
The police prosecutor told the court that on the day of the incident, Persaud and his wife were returning home after visiting friends when the accused accosted him from behind and dealt him a lash. After Persaud fell to the ground, the prosecutor related, De Freitas then stabbed him several times about his body. According to the prosecutor, Persaud has since been released from the hospital.
The prosecution requested that De Freitas be remanded to prison, saying that the offence is a serious and prevalent one. It noted too that additional charges are to be laid against De Freitas shortly, in relation to complaints made by Persaud’s wife.
The unrepresented De Freitas was subsequently refused bail and the case was transferred to the Providence Magistrates’ Court for January 3.
