Haitian held with 42 pounds of gold at airport

According to Detective Constable Taniesha Perry, the man was held about 6:30 am morning by alert cops on duty.

Perry said police suspect that the jewellery may be the spoils of several robberies which have taken place in that division since last year.

“Since last year there have been several robberies in the St Andrew Central Police division. This is a co-ordinated approach by all police divisions and we are appealing to persons who may have lost gold to contact us,” Perry said.

The police can be contacted at 926-2551 and 926-8184.

The Haitian, who is married to a Jamaican woman, was yesterday being questioned by cops at the Half-Way-Tree Criminal Investigation Bureau.

As a photographer and videographer snapped photos of the gold, the Haitian could be seen holding his head in handcuffed hands.

Police have not released the man’s name but have charged him with unlawful possession of property.

Earrings, bracelets, anklets, chains, necklaces, bangles, rings and large pendants were among the items of gold which were packaged in five transparent plastic bags. The gold is said to have an approximate value of $1 million.

In recent times, the robbery of gold has increased, while a booming cash-for-gold business has sprung up at central points in the Corporate Area such as downtown Kingston, Half-Way-Tree and Cross Roads where dozens of persons can be seen waving wads of $1,000-bills and offering cash for gold.

The practice continues even though police have warned that trading in gold without a licence is an offence punishable by a fine or conviction.

However, investigators took pains to point out that they were not linking this haul to that trade.
