FBI questions Iranian held in T&T

(Trinidad Express) An Iranian national, suspected to be linked with international terrorist organisations, was detained at a house in Arouca on Wednesday.

Local police called in agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), who interviewed the man at the Arouca Police Station before he was released.

The 31-year-old was among four persons arrested at a house in Tacarigua, around 2 p.m. on Wednesday, by officers from the Special Branch and the Arouca Police Station.

Two women and another man were subsequently released after they were interviewed and told police they were employed by the foreigner.

The man, who is also a citizen of the US, reportedly told police he is a businessman in the marketing industry and came to Trinidad in September to conduct business.

A source at Interpol told the Express the man is the holder of Iranian and US passports.
Officers have remained tight-lipped over the incident and have not officially divulged any information to the media.
The Express was reliably informed FBI agents conducted an extensive check on the man’s background while he was at the Arouca Police Station.

When questioned on whether FBI agents were called in to interview the Iranian national, Jeff Mazer of the Public Affairs Unit of the US Embassy in Port of Spain did not deny or confirm our query.
“We feel this is a question that is better asked of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago on matters taking place in Trinidad,” Mazer said.

An Interpol source added “red flags” were raised after they discovered the man visited several countries which are known to have terrorist networks.
