The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) in collaboration with the ICC World T20 project team held a land search and rescue workshop to prepare participants who will be on stand-by to respond to any disaster during the matches in Guyana.
The three-day workshop began on Wednesday and 15 participants were from the Guyana Defence Force, Guyana Fire Service, and the CDC. Station Officer Gregory Wickham of the Guyana Fire Service and De Vaughn Lewis of Guyana Red Cross Society were the instructors and Captain Kester Craig, Operations and Training Officer of the CDC, was the course coordinator.
According to the course coordinator Craig, there are land, sea and air rescue plans and this exercise will be reviewed so that the various rescue plans can be updated if needed while. The ICC representative it was the first time he was part of such an exercise and said that the execution of the plan was very good. He also commended the efforts put reflected that the participants were prepared in the eventuality of disaster at the stadium on match day.
The CDC yesterday concluded the workshop with a simulation exercise at the old burnt out Guyana Rice Marketing Board property located on Water Street. A team was responsible for marking and searching and another executed the rescue, transferring the bodies and closing the building. The participants were then divided into two teams with the objective being to undertake first responder protocol, which included search and building marking techniques, start method to remove victims found on the surface, removal, load lifting and stabilisation techniques for rescue and correct stabilisation and extraction of victims in a given scenario.
