Working together is the only way forward

I would like to wish you and your staff a prosperous and productive new year. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of your readers a very good new year. 2009 has been a good year for the world economy, in the sense that the economic meltdown has been stymied and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. This stabilizing effect has to be attributed, in no small part, to the inauguration of President Obama and his ‘hands on’ attention to the world economic crisis. In later years and with what some call ‘hindsight,’ the world will remember 2009 as the start of the Obama era, heralding a new capitalist creed (more of a human face), with the United States of America leading the way, from the most downtrodden areas on earth to the new frontiers of space. Change is in the air internationally.

We in Guyana have choices to make soon for the future of this country, and in 2010 we must urge all our friends, family and neighbours to register to vote, especially our youth. The choices are getting clearer as we approach the general elections in 2011, not only locally, but at the international level, because what happens abroad affects us and our economy in many ways. Working together is the only way forward, and following the lead of Obama while rejecting the old dogmas of the past will bring us the changes we need for a secure future. God bless Guyana and all Guyanese.

Yours faithfully,
Cheddi (Joey) Jagan (Jr)
