Dear Editor,
Happy New Year to the staff of Stabroek News.

One of the subjects of satire in ‘This is we’ and ‘Stretched out Magazine’ seems to have been the unresolved allegations of sexual abuse of a child which were made against Mr Kwame McCoy.

The producers of these shows know their audiences. Is it then, that the sexual abuse of children in Guyana is a joke, and that allegations of child sexual abuse are intended to mock the people against whom the allegations are made rather than to bring perpetrators to justice?

So, is the Guyanese society of 2010 heavily tolerant of child abuse, especially sexual abuse?

Would we continue to see Guyanese satire use allegations of child abuse and rape as themes to poke fun at public officials?  We should be aiming for a society where the sexual abuse of children draws outrage, not laughter.

Yours faithfully,
Vidyaratha Kissoon
