Why no complaints about GGMC’s checkpoints?

Dear Editor,

Congratulations to the Bartica police and marshals. During the Feb 1 miners’ demonstration in Bartica, everything was very peaceful and orderly. What I did not hear at the rally was the complaint usually made by miners on my call-in programme about GGMC’s road checkpoints where security personnel search them and if they find gold they seize same. Why not make that an issue too? Other problems in Bartica are as follows:

1. The GPL power station is smoking out the residents of southern First Avenue. Residents are complaining of stomach pains and coughing. Buildings, doors and window blinds are black with soot. GPL, please do something about the smoke.

2. Some private hire cars in Bartica have big boom boxes in their cars, and they speed through our streets with loud music disturbing the old and the young, night and day.

3. The road from Three Miles Potaro to Sherima is a nightmare to travel on. It needs urgent attention.

4. We would like to have our Tuesday Steamer day back.

Yours faithfully,
Winston Miller Snr
