Things that bother me

Dear Editor,
An eminent Guyanese educator turned politician, named Robert Hart, was a columnist in one of our newspapers in the nineteen fifties. His topic was ‘Things that bother me.’ Elsewhere in this world there will always be problems mainly because of the human factor. However, every society should try to solve its difficulties.

NIS poses a headache much of the time even though our population continues to be one of the smallest in the world. Within recent times, there seems to be a continual misplacement of relevant documents, particularly life certificates. It is stressful for senior citizens to be replacing lost life certificates so often. Let us remember that many people live far and are in ill-health.

Another problem continues to be the noise nuisance from mini-buses, music carts, private and hire cars, residences, hotels and bars. The decibel level of the music is sometimes unbearable and the lyrics are often very suggestive or outright vulgar.

My opinion is that we are experiencing a breakdown of law, order and discipline in this tiny society. It is hoped the law enforcement agencies can restore order in this country specifically in areas like the Stabroek Market Square, the Demico area around the car and mini-bus parks and also Parliament Building. Vendors, idlers, mini-bus touts and scores of schoolchildren cause great congestion.

Yours faithfully,
M Clarke
