Service from phone booth at Annai is very poor

Dear Editor,
I am a resident of the North Rupununi. I would like to bring to the attention of the relevant authorities at GT&T some rather annoying and inconvenient problems with their phone booth located at the RDC Compound, Annai Village. These problems are nothing new it must be noted. They have been prevalent ever since the booth was established, and I feel that if they are not highlighted in the press, efforts will never be made to remedy them.

This phone booth at Annai serves as a vital communication link between the North Rupununi and locations such as Georgetown and Lethem. And because of this fact the phone booth is regularly used by many persons from villages across the North Rupununi on a daily basis. It would therefore have been expected that GT&T, upon the realization of the importance of this vital communication link would have at least tried to ensure that the service offered is of a reasonable standard.

On the contrary, the quality of service leaves a lot to be desired. When making or receiving calls, the phone makes a lot of static-like noise and as such reception is very poor. It is therefore very difficult to carry on a conversation. Well we can live with that; at least we have a phone service.

However, the most annoying and infuriating thing about this phone booth is when the GT&T landline card has to be used to make calls. Nine out of ten times, when the pin number of the card is entered, you receive an error message stating, “Sorry, you have made too many mistakes”!

This happens day in and day out, night and day.  If you are one of the lucky ones, perhaps you may be able to get through with your landline card and make a call, albeit one with lots of noisy disruptions. We the residents of the North Rupununi have to put up with this service every single day, but what choice do we have?

In this day and age can we honestly say that we are receiving a good service from GT&T? I strongly doubt it.

I am therefore asking the CEO of GT&T to look into this matter with urgency. All around Guyana the CEO trumpets about how GT&T has done a world of good for telecommunications in Guyana. Come on CEO it cannot be that hard to get the telephone service at Annai improved.

Yours faithfully,
P Daniels
