$1,500 after fifteen years of contributions to NIS

Dear Editor,
After working with the Guyana Defence Force for ten years and with Ministry of Works for five years, my father, who is now retired, went to the National Insurance to investigate what his benefits would be after making contributions to the NIS for fifteen years.

He was told that he had not made the requisite contributions to qualify for a monthly pension, however he was entitled to a grant. After following up with the NIS office for about two years, my father was told that his grant had been approved and was ready to be collected.

With enthusiasm he went to the local office and was surprised that after fifteen years of contributions to the NIS, his grant was $1,500.

Is this a just reward for fifteen years of contributions to the NIS?

Yours faithfully,
Ignatius  Prowell
