Expressions can misrepresent GuySuCo’s situation

Dear Editor,

The formulation on page 13 of Kaieteur News on Sunday, February 21, can seriously mislead those who pay only cursory attention to the sugar industry, its operations and the reported decision-making. The admixture of such expressions as “high-paid,” “contractor,” “disastrous production performance” can, in some instances, misrepresent the situation surrounding named departures from GuySuCo.

For example the records would show that Dr Harold Davis has worked with the sugar industry for more than thirty years, and therefore could not be a “contractor.” He is therefore unlikely to be “high-paid” in the same context as those recently recruited senior personnel, even though his seniority of service may have earned him, in a structured progression, more salary than his fellow Finance Director, but presumably not as much as the recently appointed Deputy Chief Executive.

Additionally, information suggests that the Chief Executive was not part of the alleged Board decision to ‘send off’ the Agricultural Research Director, as reported by KN, if indeed his presence were necessary. In any case Dr Davis, respected as an honourable man throughout his decades of distinguished service to the sugar industry, as a matter of sheer consistency, would have resigned.

Yours faithfully,
E B John
