We are three shut-in cases but senior citizens of Guyana living together in one home on the West Coast Demerara. Two of my sisters who are old age pensioners are bedridden. One is 73 years old and the other is 65 years old. I am 75 years old and am suffering from a spinal injury. I can hardly stand up and walk. Due to our helplessness, it becomes very difficult for us to reach the hospital for medical treatment.
In the year 2006 Teacher Dorothy Ramjiwan (who was the head mistress for the Windsor Forest Primary School) once brought Dr. Mahendra K. Chand to our home, to give us a check up and treat us for our illnesses. (This she did as a part of the Sai Organization Selfless Service activity of the Windsor Forest Sai Centre).
Since then whenever any of my two sisters or I needed medical help, I only had to call Dr. Chand by telephone and tell him how we are sick and needed his help, and within an hour or so, Dr. Chand is there at our home, looking after us free of charge. Up to the 20th of February 2010, Dr. Chand was at our home looking after us. We are not related to Dr. Chand in any way, and he never took any money from us for his services or for his trouble of leaving his clinic and rushing to help us in time.
If Dr. Chand does so much for us three old age shut-in cases, then why did he neglect his medical duty as a doctor, regarding the boy in police custody at the Leonora Police Station? It leaves me somewhat perplexed and confused.
I do not know anything much about the matter, all I know is that Dr. Chand is one who is dedicated in saving lives and relieving pain and suffering. I am kindly asking the Minister of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy to give him a warning if he is at fault for any reason, please do not suspend him from practising, because all those who depend on him for medical attention like the three of us shut-in cases will suffer. (We are already suffering due to old age and illness.)
Such selfless, kindhearted and compassionate doctors like Dr. Mahendra K. Chand are very hard to find these days.
