Other leaders should follow Jagdeo on Iran

Dear Editor,

Reading the report in your Sunday 14th edition about aircraft being supplied to Venezuela from China I am reminded of the early sixties when the PPP was in office the first time around. It was the time of the anti communism hysteria here in Guyana and Premier Cheddi Jagan remarked `I will trade with the devil if it means good for Guiana.’

At the time the devil as seen through the eyes of the PNC, TUC, UF and the defenders of freedom guided by the U.S.A was China, the Soviet Union and Castro’s Cuba. Right up to the late sixties China was kept out of the United Nations.

China kept diligently going in the right direction and presently it is now a world power that would not be dictated to by the US and EU and now China has veto powers in the UN.

At present there are no defenders of freedom and the UF is closely aligned to the PPP while the PNC and TUC have progressive leaders and even though the devil now as seen by the US is Iran and Venezuela I don’t see the TUC and PNC being swayed to follow the lead of the US in being anti Iran or anti Venezuela and China will not allow itself to join with USA and EU to bully Iran or Venezuela. While President Jagdeo made it quite clear he would not allow the US to prevent his government dealing with Iran, I do hope other leaders in this area follow President Jagdeo’s example on this issue.

Yours faithfully,
Wendell P. George
