If he is hiding from the police Michael David Kirton should turn himself in

I write with regard to a news story in Thursday’s edition of your newspaper headlined ‘Michael David Kirton wanted by police in relation to forgery.’ The person identified in the news article is my brother. At the outset I would like to use your letter column to encourage him, if in fact he is hiding from the police, to turn himself in.

I see from the bulletin that his last known address is 16 Pere Street Kitty. The Kirton family has not occupied that residence in almost two decades. So, if that address was used to serve any legal documents on my brother he would not have received them.

No one is perfect, but over the years my brother has not been as stable and as rational an individual as his immediate and extended family would have hoped for. We have all worked over the years to help him address his shortcomings and indiscretions. As far as we know he has never been convicted of a crime and we sincerely hope that his being wanted by the police for questioning about a forgery does not mean that he has committed and/or is guilty of committing a crime. Our prayers are with him and justice will prevail, either way. If he did in fact commit a crime then he must live with the consequences. If he didn’t, we hope the ‘system’ will be fair to him, as it ought to be to every citizen.

One blog on your website expressed the hope that my brother was not being made a scapegoat for the political views of his brothers. At this time I have no evidence that this is the case.

As one who from time to time comments on issues in the news via your letter columns I hope you publish this letter, Editor. For me not to offer my comments on this news item would be remiss, if not hypocritical.

Yours faithfully,
Wesley Kirton
