Sugar production budget for first crop was revised because of conditions last year

Dear Editor,

The Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc notes your article in the May 26 edition regarding our production figures for the 1st crop in 2010 (‘Sugar output to fall far below first crop target – sources’).
While we appreciate your effort to inform your readership about the performance of our industry, the corporation takes this opportunity in the interim to clarify certain aspects of our production efforts.

The sugar production budget for the 1st crop in 2010 was revised as a consequence of conditions last year. One must be mindful of the severe implications of the ‘El Nino’ period on our harvesting efforts in the 1st crop this year.

However, there are other aspects of our operation such as tillage and replanting, where the corporation recorded a very successful second half achievement in 2009. The benefits of this will be realized in the harvesting period for the 2nd crop this year.

The corporation will be issuing a more detailed press release on all aspects of our 1st crop production in 2010.

Yours faithfully,
