Congratulations on Rory Westmaas’ article on architecture (second part) published in the Guyana Review Vol 17 Issue, May 5, 2010.
Architecture is “the art or science of designing and constructing buildings.” There have been some shocks to our collective sensitivities such as when Courts chose to paint their Main Street building yellow. Also the ‘Castle’ at Republic Park, now, alas, in ruins. Courts got away from traditional white paint. That and the increase in concrete buildings changed our buildings’ colours.
The ‘Castle’ is in ruins yet ideas are not dead. There is a surprise, a treat (?), definitely a child’s joy to view Guyana’s new ‘Castle’ situated in the village of Annandale, ECD. To view this creation, drive east on the main East Coast road. You will come to a major bridge reconstruction where traffic is reduced to a single lane, one-way bypass.
Get by this obstacle and continue some yards to the first left turn. Turn left into the village, drive straight down the road for 4 or 5 blocks. Look down each road on the left until – behold – you cannot miss it.
Perhaps your paper could photograph (in colour) this building for the enjoyment of many.
