Police brutality should not be tolerated

Dear Editor,

The story in Wednesday’s issue of SN (June 2) on the alleged police abuse of Mr Kwesi Smith is most disgusting and disgraceful behaviour unbefitting of law enforcement. This kind of police brutality by some members of the force should not be tolerated, and more stringent selection strategies ought to be implemented to keep unsuitable applicants from enlisting and further tarnishing the good name of the force.

The police are not a law to themselves, although some have this misguided opinion, which most likely stems from unsavoury behaviour patterns, possibly traceable to a disturbing or unpleasant childhood background.

I do hope that the pride of the force prevails in meting out the full dose of punishment to anyone found guilty, and that their services would be terminated immediately. More importantly, however, they should undergo some kind of anger management and further made to give back to the communities which they have so miserably failed.

The world is a much smaller place now, thanks to technology. All note whatever happens in the smallest corner of the globe, and as we all know Guyana’s record of police and domestic abuse is sad and well documented.

Yours faithfully,
Bernard Ramsay
