Sewage overflow in Henry Street

Dear Editor,
A serious health hazard in the form of a sewage overflow has erupted in Henry Street,  Werk-en-Rust. It started on Thursday, September 9, 2010, and the sewage water is flowing continuously into yards.

The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) received initial reports and made a promise to rectify the problem. Reports were also directed to the Public Utilities Commission in an effort to press for urgent action.

Until now, GWI has not visited the location or sought to provide any relief except for issuing a mere reference number. Relief is overdue here in the capital of the country.

The residents are suffering severely, not to mention the stench and health risks. The use of outdoor facilities has been abandoned as a result.

In the circumstances, it would only be humane for GWI to apply the water rates already paid for the current year to 2011, and offer some tangible compensation for damage done to property.
Yours faithfully,
(Name and address provided)
