What are field conditions like on GuySuCo’s Demerara estates?

Dear Editor,

One of my GAWU contacts has shared some dreaded news on the field conditions at GuySuCo’s Demerara  estates. Any concerned Guyanese would be wondering why the independent media and the political opposition, including the AFC are not drilling down into the field conditions in the Demerara estates and the state of readiness of the new Skeldon state-of-the-art factory to expose the incompetence of this regime. The word coming out of the mouths of the GAWU operatives from Berbice is that the old Skeldon factory is more efficient to date than the new factory.  Is this accurate? Did we spend US$200 million for this ‘sick’ grey elephant’?

I did not focus on GuySuCo for the last 6 months since I was under the impression that all the kinks were being ironed out by Ms Gita Knight and Mr Raj Singh and their colleagues, until our President opened his mouth to deflect the blame from his Board of Directors, his Minister and himself.  As the old people say, mouth open, story jump out.  The last man standing in the race for the PPP presidential candidate in 2011, Mr Donald Ramotar, has been a key member of the GuySuCo board for many years and thus is not absolved managerially and politically for the state of play at the corporation.

Yours faithfully,
Sasenarine Singh
