Dear Editor,
Just a few days ago, Guyana was bracing itself for a direct hit by Hurricane Tomas. Today, we are lucky that the country has been spared the ravages which normally accompany these natural disasters.
We should have said thanks to whichever God we worship, be it in our temples, mosques, churches or homes. As we look around we are reminded of countries that have suffered and are still awaiting appropriate aid – a reminder to us that all nations are under the eyes of natural disasters and whatever aid the rich countries could have afforded are given priority for their own.
A case in point is Haiti, under plastic tents with a cholera outbreak and likely to face hurricane Tomas. Pakistan is also another example where pledges have fallen short on promises.
Out of abundant caution and for my own personal knowledge could you say where our disaster shelters are located and what method is used as a national warning?
In the USA after 911 people kept sneakers and other disaster aids at their offices/factories for a ‘comfortable’ get away, remembering the last one.
