Commercial flights operated from Mackenzie airport in the 1940s

Dear Editor,

Correspondence which I received from Mr Rod Grimes-Graeme confirms that the structure which was opposite the Parliament Building was also once the terminal building at Mackenzie. There is also proof that commercial flights were operated from Mackenzie International Airport during the mid and late 1940s. An edited version of the correspondence follows:

“I was surprised by how many people said there had never been a terminal building at Mackenzie. I arrived there in 1945 with my family and left in 1952 and the building was there.

Not much happened in Mackenzie so a trip to the airport was great excitement. I got back to Mackenzie in 1965 on CF OTX, the Demba Otter, and there was no sign of the building. I was told it had been moved to Georgetown and later I was shown it. It is very sad to see it being torn down.”

Yours faithfully,
