- Derrick Carter named MVP
Five days after defeating Alpha United 2-1 to capture the 20th annual Kashif and Shanghai football tournament title, the BK International Western Tigers received their spoils at a simple ceremony held at the office of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Wednesday night.

Apart from collecting the tournament’s $1.2M first prize and exquisite silverware, the team’s goal-keeper, Derrick Carter, was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and rode off with a new Jailing 125 Motor Cycle compliments of R&F Mining.

Carter only conceded on goal throughout the tournament and the goal was scored during his team’s 3-1 penalty win over former champions Pele in the semi-finals.

Added to that, Carter was also adjudged goal-keeper of the tournament while team captain Delon Fraser was named defender of the tournament and Cornel Millington best coach.

The night certainly belonged to Western Tigers as their players took home most the individual awards with Dwayne Ali, who scored the winning goal in the final against Alpha United, walking away the trophy for the player who had the most impact in the tournament.

Colin Nelson was adjudged the most improved player.

New comers Riddim Squad also took home some accolades for reaching the quarter finals in their first outing.

The Mocha Arcadia-based team was given the fair-play trophy while Sceyon Hope was named the most promising player of the tournament.

Pele star striker Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson and third place finishers Sunburst Camptown flashy forward Telson McKinnon were jointly given the highest goal-scorers award after finishing with four goals each.

Bakewell Topp XX’s veteran striker Collie ‘Hitman’ Hercules for his spectacular goal during his team’s 3-2 penalty win over Netrockers was given the goal of the tournament trophy and Alpha United’s Philbert Moffat was named the best midfield player

Camptown was also named the best offensive team and Western Tigers, was named the best defensive team.

At the closing and prize giving ceremony the organisers committed to the continuity of the tournament and also assured that next year’s tournament will be bigger.
