A squad of 20 players is presently training at the National Park Rugby field under Adonis who told Stabroek Sport yesterday that 12 players will be named on Sunday for the February 13-14 tournament in the USA.

Rugby West Indies head coach Joe Whipple, who serves as the Technical Director for the current team, will be in Guyana on Friday for weekend training and will be making his final assessment of the players.

“Well this weekend we have a few games amongst ourselves and Joe will be here for that as well and will be taking them th-rough his paces. We will take the squad down to 12 players even though it is not easy, you know. I can’t say if it will be announced then but I know we will be bringing it down,” Adonis said. He said that he was happy with the fitness level shown by the players adding that they were all eager to make the final cut and were showing a great deal of enthusiasm. “We have a few players who have recovered well from injuries, like the captain (Claudius Butts), these guys have been putting in a lot of work recently. They have been responding well to the training so it would be a tough time selecting the 12 best players for Las Vegas,” Adonis declared.

Guyana is the only side from the Caribbean in the 16 team tournament and is grouped with power houses New Zealand, Australia and France in Group A.

The five time Caribbean champs will open their quest for history against Australia on February 13.
