Wado Ryu Karate serving students well at Mae’s Academy

Director of Mae’s Primary School, Mayglen Charles stated that karate administered at her school twice weekly has aided in the all-round development of the students who attend the classes.

Sensei Darren Nurse stands with members of Mae’s dojo.

Charles told Stabroek Sport that the dojo has grown over the months and she is very pleased with the children who seem to be more relaxed and disciplined in class.

According to the director, some students may have seemed  restless but the exercise is helping them to  become settled.

President of the Guyana Wado Ryu Karate Association (GWKA) Sensei Darren Nurse said the Mae’s dojo started two and a half years ago and he is encouraging the secondary school students to join the classes.

Over the years the primary school students would attend the classes but it’s difficult to have secondary students participate.

Sensei Nurse further stated that the GWKA currently has four dojos located at Banks DIH,  Mae’s, Tuschen and Eccles and the association is seeking to increase the number of karatekas while building dojos in other regions.

He is also encouraging interested persons to contact the association or visit one of the GWKA dojos.

The young karatekas are  all excited and are encouraging their peers to join the classes. They are all happy to be a more disciplined group and according to some, being in the sport has helped them to stay out of trouble.
