Meusa curtails Tiwari’s hopes

-as Taffin Khan secures first senior tournament triumph

National Chess champion Wendell Meusa put a spoke in Errol Tiwari’s wheel allowing former national junior chess champion Taffin Khan to secure his first tournament win playing as a senior.

The winners and runners-up display their prizes along with Trophy Stall’s Ramesh Sunich and his family.

Khan, captured the Trophy Stall Chess Tournament which ended on Sunday at the Kei-Shar’s Sports Club building on Hadfield Street after finishing with six points out of a maximum seven.

His only loss was to Tiwari and heading into the final round, the two players were locked on five points each.

But Khan was able to defeat experienced campaigner Loris Nathoo in a tense end-game battle while Tiwari succumbed to Meusa.

The victory earned Meusa, who ended on five and one half points, the runner up spot with Tiwari, stuck on five points, placed third.

Shiv Nandalall, Irshad Mohamed and Carlos Allicock all ended on four points while Brian Thompson,  Nathoo and Michael Pereira finished with three and a half points.

Chino Chung, Dennis Dillon and Ryan Singh finished with  three points  and Nowrattan Persaud two.

In the junior category, Raan Motilall played undefeated to capture the title.

Motilall secured five wins and two draws to finish on six points and was adjudged the most improved player of the tournament.

Saeed Ali and Khalid Gajraj ended on five and one half points but Ali was given the second position based on the Median Buchlloz tie break system.

Kana Khan with five points took the fourth position while  Rashad Hussain, Sham Khan and Ryan McKay all ended on four and a half points.

They were followed by Carlos Petterson, Stanley Ming Jr, Ganesh Persaud and Mandy Ramnarine on four points each while Ashwant Satamand finished on three and a half points. Some seven players ended the tournament with three points each.
