Sir Garry, Haynes headliners for BTA tournament

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Legendary all-rounder Sir Garry Sobers and former West Indies opening batsman Desmond Haynes are expected to headline the Barbados Tourism Authority’s Invitational Golf tournament which tees off here today.

The two former West Indies cricketers will be special guests for the event which takes place at the Millennium Lakes Golf & Country Club in Trincity.

Linda Christian-Clarke, the BTA’s senior business development manager for the Caribbean and Latin America, believes Haynes and Sir Garry’s participation will augur well for promoting the island’s golfing product.

“It is a great opportunity to promote the excellent golf facilitates that we have in Barbados and the upcoming golfing events, as well as our exciting calendar of the sports and cultural events,” she said.

Haynes and Sir Garry will be joined by double world batting record holder Brian Lara and outstanding former Trinidad and Tobago midfielder Russell Latapy.

Tournament director, Richard Lara, Brian Lara’s brother, said this week the tournament was fully subscribed and applications would only be accepted from three more teams which would comprise the reserve list.

Fifty teams comprising two players each will compete for a range of prizes to be distributed among the top 15 teams.
