QC wins three medals in Barbados

Despite the school’s initial challenges, Queen’s College returned to Guyana with a gold, silver and bronze medals from the renowned Barbados Relay Fair held at the Barbados National Stadium last week.

In the school’s fifth year at the tournament, its team in the under-20 4x100m relay upstaged reigning champions The Lodge School to record a time of 43.57 seconds in winning the event.

According to team captain Joshua Griffith, he was pleased with the performance of all the athletes and was overjoyed with the gold in the 400m relay. The team, which was anchored by national schools’ champion, Carlwyn Collins, was led off by Drexell Noble with Kareem Critchlow and Griffith running the second and third legs respectively.  The 33-team showpiece event also saw the school athletes taking the silver medal in the 2800m medley relay (400, 600m, 600,1200m).

Griffith, who is a 400m and 800m runner, said  that the competition was intense and the two months of training as a unit had benefited the athletes greatly. He said that he was proud and he lauded all parents, sponsors and coaches who  played a part in their achievements.

On the distaff side, Yonessa Fredericks, Celisa De Florimonte, Sarah Martin and Shebiki Beaton guided their school to a bronze on the synthetic track in the 4×400 relay event.
