The West Indies team pulled a significant victory out of the bag against Zimbabwe yesterday at the Providence National Stadium to level the 2010 Digicel Series 1 – 1.
The win not only stopped the string of 14 consecutive defeats but it also improved the West Indies’ chances of winning the Digicel Trophy at stake in the five One-Day International Series.
This is the team’s first win of the year and spectators thronged the Guyana National Stadium to once again support the home team in their final match here before the team heads off to St. Vincent and the Grenadines to continue the series on Wednesday.
At yesterday’s post match press conference man of the match Narsingh Deonarine said: “I have been playing a lot of good cricket lately and of all my innings I rate this as the best.”
The classy left-hander, who batted at number six, was unbeaten on 65 at the end.
“When I went out there I just did my job and it was easy with the captain Gayle at my side because I just had to turn the strike over and keep getting runs.” Deonarine stated.
He added that he analyzed the situation and tried to be as relaxed as possible, even though wickets fell in quick succession he kept his composure.
Captain of the Zimbabwe team, Prosper Utseya, said that his team struggled with the bat yesterday while his bowlers remained consistent on the pitch that he said played a lot different from the one on Thursday.
“I definitely thought the pitch played differently because the ball was not bouncing as much and it began to turn a lot.
“The batting was a bit ambitious from the guys, we wanted to get a good score on the board but unfortunately we kept losing wickets.
“We needed someone to stay through to the end to get a better chance of getting to a good target,” he said.
“We pushed them and put up a good fight and with the work we have been doing if we played to our best we would have had a good opportunity to win,” he said.
