Cricketer injured during U19 trial game

The first day of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) under-19 two-day trial match at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ended with Stephon Sampson being rushed to the hospital after he was hit in the face as he attempted to field a ball on the boundary.

When Stabroek Sport contacted the hospital last evening this newspaper was told that the cricketer was awake but a representative in the emergency room said that he could not divulge  any further information on the extent of the injury.

Sampson, who is playing in the Dexter Solomon XI, had made 12 runs in his team’s paltry total of 97 all out.

At one point his team was precariously placed on 41-8 against Dillon Fernandes XI who were 250-9 at stumps.

Solomon XI’s Omesh Danram showed some resistance with the bat scoring 43 from 51 balls with eight fours.

Clevon Hyman chipped in with 17 while left-arm spinner Raj Nanan grabbed 3-6.

Pacer Andre Stoll chipped in with 2-4 while  Neil Barry Jr. took 2-15 and off spinner Ricardo Devers 1-16.

When Fernandes XI batted, Quincy Ovid-Richardson (69) and Mohan Ramdeen (34) put on an 84-run opening partnership. Ovid-Richardson faced 80 balls and stroked seven fours while Ramdeen hit five boundaries. Later in the innings Tahron Byron, who is currently unbeaten on 45 with Shaqueel Williams on one, shared in an eight wicket stand with Safraz Esau who made 36.

Christopher Surat and Raphael Singh were the chief wicket takers for the Solomon XI with figures of 3-22 and 2-26 respectively. Danram, Amir Khan and Trevon Frank each took a wicket apiece.
