Deccan charges past Chennai

Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds, Herschelle Gibbs and Chaminda Vaas made significant contributions as Deccan Charges defeated the Chennai Super Kings by 31 runs in the fifth match of the Indian Premier League yesterday.

Symonds blasted an even 50, Gibbs was run out for 45 and Gilchrist made 38 as the Deccan Chargers posted 190-4 in their allotted 20 overs.

In reply, Vaas, as experienced as they come grabbed three wickets including that of danger man Matthew Hayden as the Chennai Super Kings ended on 159-9.

Gilchrist, whose 38 came from just 17 balls, became the first batsman in the IPL to reach 1000 runs.

Albie Morkel scored an unbeaten 42 while Mahendra Singh Dhoni also scored 42 and Justin Kemp 22 as the Deccan Chargers recovered from their opening round loss the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Pragyan Ojha supported Vass with 2-28 while Rohit Sharma captured 1-27.
