-no place for Chanderpaul junior

The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) junior selection panel yesterday named a 14-man team to represent Guyana at  the Regional limited overs tournament in Trinidad and  Tobago from March 28 to April 5. The committee also named six standby players including  Tagenarine Chanderpaul, the son of West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

Chanderpaul’s non selection could be bacuse of his slow batting  which was evident in the Demerara Cricket Board Inter Association final where he batted all but one over of the 45 overs to make 34 runs. However, it is important to note that the 12-year-old Chanderpaul is technically sound and will get better with time as he continues to develop his game.

Conversely, the team has some of the country’s most talented players in the mix and a lot will be expected from the players in the Twin Island Republic.  In the batting line up there is aggressive Demerara opening batsman Brian Sattaur, Essequibo’s Ricardo Adams, who came five runs short of a century against Berbice in a round three game in the Inter County tournament, Demerara’s Kadesh Yadram and Romario De Jonge of Berbice. Those batsmen have all shown that they are capable of taking the initiative away from the bowlers.

The bowling is equally strong with left arm spinner Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai, currently in his final year at this level, being the most experienced.

He will be supported  by Dexter George, spin whiz Devon Lord and pacer Vishan Narayan. The team will be coached by Adrian Amsterdam with Elroy Stephney being the manager.

The team departs Guyana on March 26 for the tournament. Guyana team reads: Brian Sattaur, Quacy McPherson, Romario De Jonge, Shawn Perreira, Shalendra Shameer, Parmanand Narine, Ricardo Adams, Kamesh Yadram, Prince Roberts, Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai, Dexter George, Hassan Mohamed, Devon Lord and Vishaal Narayan.

Manager: Elroy Stephney and Coach: Adrian Amsterdam

Standby players: Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Henry Greene, Nazirdin Bux, Ryan Chichester, Raj Parbattie and Shimron Hetmyer.
