Demerara trials got underway yesterday with for the upcoming Inter County 50-over women’s tournament on March 25 with Joann Vansertima XI defeating the Devanie Sewnarine XI by 30 runs at the Eve Leary ground yesterday.

Vansertima XI batted themselves from 89-6 to 181 all out  then  led the way with bowling figures of 4-7, as Sewnarine XI folded at 150 all out. When the first side batted, Shireard Emerson (37) and national Captain Waheeda Samdally (23) batted their team to its eventual total.

The two ran well between the wicket and hit the occasional boundary but their partnership and the team were also gifted with 44 extras from the bowling side. The batting side’s next highest score was 21 coming from Victoria Bacchus.

Onicka Walleson was the top bowler for the Sewnarine-led side with 4-15 and she garnered good support from Prudence Williams and Akasa Thompson with figures of 2-17 and 2-40 respectively. When they replied 39 extras contributed the most runs to the score of 150 but Sewnarine top scored with 31.

Williams and Nalini Summentra each scored 18 runs with Walleson chipping in with 11.

The next match will be played today at the same venue from 09:30 hours.
