ST. PAUL’S, St. Kitts, CMC – West Indies Women were undermined by three run-outs, and Suwini de Alwis’ left-arm spin, and crashed to a 38-run defeat in the second One-day International against Sri Lanka Women on Tuesday.
Pamela Lavine, Shanel Daley and Kirbyina Alexander were all run out, and de Alwis snared three wickets for 33 runs from nine overs, as the Windies Women failed to successfully chase 199 for victory from their allocation of 50 overs at the St. Paul’s Sports Complex.
The result meant that the two-match series ended in a 1-1 draw, after the Windies Women won the first match by three wickets last Sunday at the same venue.
Stafanie Taylor hit the top score of 36 from 82 balls for the Windies Women, Daley supported with 28, and stand-in captain Anisa Mohammed was not out on 23.
The Windies Women had let the Sri Lanka Women off the hook, after the visitors won the toss, chose to bat, and were dismissed for 198 in 49.4 overs.
Lavine was the most successful Windies Women’s bowler with four wickets for 17 runs from 7.4 overs, Mohammed captured two for 33 from her allotment of 10 overs, and Taylor took two for 35 from her 10 overs.
The Windies Women then suffered an early setback, when Lavine was run out for a duck without facing a ball in the first over. Cordel Jack joined Taylor, and got the Windies Women moving before Sripali Weerakkody trapped her lbw for 15 to leave West Indies 37 for two in the ninth over.
The match turned dramatically out of the Windies Women’s favour, when de Alwis triggered a collapse that saw the Windies Women lose three wickets for nine runs in the space of 38 balls.
Britney Cooper and Stacy-Ann King were both lbw for 13 and nought respectively, before de Alwis held a smart return catch to dismiss Shemaine Campbelle for four to leave the Windies Women 61 for five in the 18th over.
Though Daley and Mohammed added some beef late in the innings, the Windies Women continued to lose wickets regularly.
Earlier, Lavine engineered a meltdown of the lower half of the Sri Lanka Women’s batting, after the visitors had started strongly.
The Windies Women were under early pressure, when Chamari Atapattu hit the top score of 38, and Dedunu Silva made 19 in an opening stand of 68.
Taylor had Atapattu stumped in the 14th over, and scalped Inoka Galagedara for five before Mohammed removed Silva, as Sri Lanka Women wobbled to 82 for three in the 19th over.
The Windies Women saw the Sri Lanka Women fight back with their captain Chamani Seneviratne scoring 33 and Shashikala Siriwardene 20 in a stand of 48 for the fourth wicket.
But Mohammed removed Siriwardene in the 33rd over, and Lavine ensured the visitors wobbled the rest of the way.
The Sri Lankan Women made just one change to their line-up with Galagedara replacing Hiruka Fernando, but the Windies, who were led by Mohammed, showed four changes to their line-up.
For the home team, Cooper, Alexander, Charlene Taitt, and Tramayne Smartt were brought in to replace regular captain Merissa Aguilleira, Danielle Small, Shakera Selman, and Juliana Nero.
The two teams will now commence preparations for the Women’s Twenty20 World Cup, with three Twenty20 Internationals. The tournament opens on May 5.
West Indies have been drawn in Group-A with reigning champions England, as well as Australia, and South Africa, while Sri Lanka have been placed in Group-B alongside 2009 runners-up New Zealand, as well as fellow Asian nations India
