Simmons bracing for strong Windies A

DUBLIN, Ireland, CMC – Ireland coach Phil Simmons is bracing for a strong challenge from West Indies A when the teams clash in two one-day matches here later this month.

The two games will comprise part of West Indies A’s tour of the United Kingdom where they will clash with India A in two four-day “Tests” and also do battle in a Tri-Nation Limited Overs series involving India A and hosts England Lions.

Simmons, a former West Indies all-rounder, said Windies A were a talented side which would play an exciting brand of cricket.

“They have named a very strong touring party, which will provide stern opposition for us,” Simmons noted.

“They have a nice blend of youth and experience with some high profile players, who will be looking to gain a regular place in their senior squad.

“They play an attractive brand of cricket and it promises to be a good challenge for us, but one I’m sure we can meet.”

West Indies A will clash with the Irish on June 23 and June 25 following two four-day “Tests” against India A at Grace Road and Croydon respectively.

The Caribbean side will boast the likes of captain Devon Smith, who has already played 31 Tests, along with the big-hitting Kieron Pollard and seamer Lionel Baker.

West Indies A will open their tour on Saturday with a three-day match against Glamorgan at Cardiff in Wales.
