DDL Topco Juice Open Chess Tourney starts today

The Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) second annual Topco Juice Chess Tournament, organized by the Guyana Chess Federation, gets underway today at Kei-shar’s Sports Club from 2pm.

DDL’s Brand Executive, Alexis Crawford (right), hands over the sponsorship cheque to GCF’s Shiv Nandalall.

The tournament was officially launched earlier in the week when DDL Brand Executive Alexis Crawford handed over the sponsorship cheque to the federation and reaffirmed her company’s commitment to the development of chess in Guyana.

She noted that while chess may have a small following now, it is growing as the chess federation is persevering in promoting the growth of the popular board game.

GCF’s Shiv Nandalall in reply, expressed gratitude to the company for its support.

He maintained that the federation was fully committed to spreading chess locally, especially among youths, since they believe that the game will help them to plan ahead.

The seven-round junior and senior tournaments which will be played only on Saturdays will  conclude next Saturday when prizes will be presented to the top performers.

A special trophy will be awarded to the best beginner.

Players are asked to walk with their chess sets and a pen to score their moves. Registration fee for adults who are not members of the GCF is $800 while junior non–members will pay $600.
