Mayor’s Cup knockout tournament…New champion to be crowned tonight

A new Mayor’s Cup champion will be crowned tonight when the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Santos Football Clubs go head-to-head in the final at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground from 8.30pm.

Neither team has reached this far before and so winning the competition along with the top prize of $400,000 will be huge incentives for both teams. The runner-up team will receive $200,000.

Prior to the final, the third place clash between Fruta Conquerors and Riddim Squad is set for  6:45pm. The winner of this match will receive $100,000 while the fourth place finisher will walk away with $75,000.

Also on the programme is a friendly encounter between Timehri Panthers and Grove Hi-Tech which kicks off at 5.30pm. Meanwhile, the close competition for the highest goal scorer will end tonight.

Leading that category is Western Tigers’ Nedd Fraser with three goals. However, his chance of extending that tally was cut short when his team was knocked out.

Still in the race for that title though are Santos’ William Europe and Glenovan Edmonds, Fruta Conquerors’ Eon Alleyne and GDF’s Desford Williams.

These players have each scored two goals.

According to organizer of the tournament, Lennox Arthur, there will be additional lighting and seating accommodation around the ground compliments of former national cricketer Lennox Cush.
