Pint-sized six-year-old Nevaeh Clarkston seemed hardly  intimidated by her older opponents yesterday as she served up an impressive performance to win two categories as the National Sports Commission (NSC) Indep-endence Table Tennis Tour-nament continued at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

With her head barely above the edge of the table, Clarkston rallied her way past her two older challengers Shawana Douglas and Tanasha Corlette to emerge winner of the 10 years and under round robin finals.

Clarkston also claimed the top spot in the eight years and under category after defeating her only competitor Douglas a second time 11-3, 12-10, 11-3.

After the Clarkston show, seven-year-old Jeremy Singh, who represented Guyana at this year’s Pre-Cadet tournament in Puerto Rico, showed he had benefited from the exposure by winning the boys’ 10 years and under category.

In the final Singh defeated Amit Mookram 11-8, 8-11, 12-10, 11-7.

Khalil Ninvalle placed third after he was given a walk-over against Rakeem Wright after Wright arrived late for their match-up.

In the other games played yesterday, Caribbean Under-13 girls singles champion Chelsea Edghill defeated Jamaali Homer to win the girls’ 13 years and under category.

Edghill won 11-7, 11-5, 11-7.

Third place went to Anna Joao after she cruised to victory against Giovanna Algo winning 11-5, 11-4, 11-4.

The tournament continues today with the semi finals of the boys’ 13 and 15 years and under categories.

Edghill will be looking to add the girls’ 15 years and under title to her collection but should find Akecia Nedd a handful.

Olivia Weekes and Homer will battle for third place.

Edghill will also contest the semi-finals of the girls’ 18 years and under category when she comes up against Angelina Rampersaud.

The winner will meet Adielle Rosheuvel in the final.
