Mayor’s Cup top performers receive awards

Guyana Defence Force (GDF) yesterday received their first-place prize of $500, 000 and a trophy from Mayor Hamilton Green after they won the 2010 Mayor’s Cup edition on Sunday evening at the Georgetown Football Club ground, Bourda.

GDF won on a 5-4 penalty shoot-out against Santos, while Fruta Conquerors defeated Riddim Squad 4-3 to cart off the third-place prize.
Green, yesterday at his office, City Hall, congratulated GDF, and also Santos for featuring in the final, while stating that the players must continue to strive for excellence.

He thanked Digicel, one of the main sponsors, and all who would have contributed to make the tournament a success.

Santos received $250, 000 and a trophy, while Fruta Conquerors and Riddim Squad took home $100, 000 and $50, 000 respectively.

Brian Robertson received a prize for being the most promising goalie, while O’Neil Haywood copped the best custodian prize.

Nedd Frazer and Mustapha Haqq were adjudged the highest goal-scorers with three goals each while the Most Valuable Player award went to Rayon Adolphus.

Meanwhile, Secretary/ Manager of GDF, Jason Benjamin, in his remarks, thanked Green for his continued support and the sponsors, and predicted that his team will win the championship in 2011.
