By Tamica Garnett

Number-two seed Jeremy Miller recorded his first men’s singles victory when he whipped Kijana Lewis 6 – 0, 6 – 1 on Saturday in the final of that category of the Guyana Bank of Trade and Industry (GBTI) lawn tennis tournament held at the GBTI Recreational Centre, Bel Air Park.

Krystal Sukra, left, shakes hands with eventual winner of the women’s singles Carol Humphrey following their encounter.

It was Miller’s second title following his win in the men’s doubles category which he won with Jason Andrews.

But he missed out on a third after himself and  partner Shawna Gentle were defeated by Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan and Godfrey Lowden 3 – 6, 7 – 5, 7 – 5 Friday night in the finals of the mixed doubles event.

Lewis reached the final after receiving a walkover from number-one seed, Philip Squires.

He had battled his way up from the preliminaries with wins over Albert Madramootoo and Jonathan Fagundes, before receiving his first walk over from Mario Niamatalli in the quarterfinals.

Miller received a bye in the preliminaries followed by a walk over from Benjattan Osbourne.

He then defeated Sandeep Chand and Leyland Leacock before topping Lewis in the final.

An elated Miller stated that he was happy about his victory, and his improved record.
