Blackwood’s double helps put Jamaica in control

GROS-ISLET, St. Lucia, CMC – Jamaica took control of their TCL Group West Indies Under-19 Challenge match against Guyana, after all-rounder Jermaine Blackwood hit a rare double hundred yesterday.

Blackwood was undefeated on 204 to anchor Jamaica to 380 in their first innings on the rain-affected second day of their second round match at the Gros-Islet Playing Field.

Leg-spinner Donovan Nelson then grabbed three wickets for 42 runs from 18 overs, and Nicholson Gordon two for 34 from 12 overs, as Guyana reached 136 for seven at the close.

Kwame Crosse again batted resolutely to lead the way for Guyana with 45 not out, and Harrinarine Chattergoon made 44.

Starting the day on an even 100 with Jamaica 256 for six, the 18-year-old Blackwood reached his milestone after lunch.

He struck 14 fours and six sixes from 293 balls and batted almost five hours before he was bowled playing on a delivery from Keon Joseph to bring the Jamaican innings to a close.

It was the second straight innings in which the West Indies Under-19 player had saved the Jamaicans.

He hit an unbeaten 90 with 12 fours and four sixes in the second innings against Trinidad & Tobago to help Jamaica to a draw after they were led on first innings at the same ground in the first round.

Blackwood is the first batsman in five years to score a regional Under-19 double-hundred, following Guyana’s Leon Johnson 200 not out against Barbados in St. Vincent.

He featured in a seventh-wicket stand of 138 with Nelson, whose 47 ended in the first half-hour of the day.

After Nelson’s departure, Blackwood farmed the tail end batting to beef-up Jamaica’s total in between the showers.

Anthony Adams was the most successful Guyanese bowler with three wickets for 96 runs from 34 overs.

Joseph finished with two for 26 from 13 overs, and leg-spinner Amir Khan took two for 111 from 42 overs.

When Guyana replied, they struggled against the varied Jamaican attack, which gained excellent support from their fielders.

The Guyanese lost wickets steadily, and failed to build any significant partnerships to stabilise the innings.
