Pompey bags 400m silver

Guyana’s Aliann Pompey continued her stellar athletics career by bagging a silver medal at the XXI Central American and Caribbean games currently underway in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

The 32-year old former Commonwealth Games gold medallist clocked 52.33s in the women’s 400m final last night.

securing medals for Guyana were boxers Ray Sandiford and Dexter Jordan who won their quarter final bouts yesterday thereby assuring themselves and their country of bronze medals.

In women’s hockey, the local ladies went under to Trinidad and Tobago 1-5 at the Videofonso Sola Morales stadium.

Pompey, who is also listed to compete in the 200m, entered yesterday’s final with the third fastest time.

She had won her semi-final heat in 52.43 seconds beating Jamaica’s Clora Williams 52.68s and Trish Bartholomew of Grenada 53.87s into second and third position respectively.

Tiandra Ponteen of St Kitts/Nevis, had entered the final with the fastest time of 52.01s while Christine Amertil of The Bahamas had clocked 52,41s in the semi-finals.

In the final, however, it was Amertil who took the gold clocking 52.16s with Ponteen third in 52.75s and Wiliams fourth in 53.04s.

In the first match of the fourth day of the boxing tournament at the Coliseo Rafael Mangual, flyweight Jordan, fighting out of the blue corner, defeated Edgar Valencia of Panama 11-3 in their 51kg quarter-final encounter.

Later, featherweight Sandiford forced the referee to stop the contest in the first round of his clash with Barnie Arguelles also of Panama in another quarter-final encounter.

Meanwhile, the local table tennis players will be in action this morning when the singles competition gets underway.

Natalie Cummings is down to face Eva Brito of the Dominican Republic, Michelle John will face Jerrica Marrero of Puerto Rico and Trenace Lowe will oppose Colombia’s Natalia Bedoya in the first round of their group matches.

In the men’s singles, Idi Lewis is down to play Marcos Madrid of Mexico, Christopher Franklyn plays Samuel Galvaez of the Dominican Republic and Paul David will lock horns with El Salvador’s Edilberto Merino.

Guyana is now assured of a gold medal won by the men’s rugby Sevens team, two silver medals and four bronze medals.
