Pompey finishes sixth in 200m

Guyana’s Aliann Pompey failed to land a second medal after placing sixth in the women’s 200m final at the XXI Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico yesterday.

Cydonie Mothersill of the Cayman Islands won the gold medal in 22.91 seconds ahead of Carol Rodrigues and Darlenis Obregona who were second and third respectively with times of  23.37 and 23.76 respectively. Pompey’s time was 24.27s.

The 400m specialist had earlier qualified for the 200m final with a game run of 23:84 seconds which saw her placing fourth in yesterday’s semi-final.

In the men’s 200m, Guyana’s Adam Harris and Lee Prowell failed to advance to the final.

Harris, in lane 5 in the first heat brought second behind Churandy Martina who won the heat in 20.90s.

Harri’s time was 21.12s but it was not good enough to see him advancing to the final with only one athlete qualifying per heat.

Prowell running out of lane 7 in heat two clocked 21.43 seconds.

Harris time placed him 13th overall out of 27 competitors while Prowell’s time placed him in the 18th position.

Guyana’s next hope for a medal in track and field rests with Marian Burnett who will compete in the women’s 800m final tomorrow.

Burnett’s personal best of 1.59; 47 is the fastest time of the eight competitors with  Rosibel Garcia’s 2.01.90 the next fastest 800m.

The eight finalists are: Burnett, Evamari Guzman and Belissa Del Valle of Puerto Rico, Colombia’s Garcia, Trinidad’s Melissa de Leon, Panama’s Andrea Ferris and Mexico’s Gabriela Medina.

Guyana’s two remaining boxers in the competition Dexter Jordan and Ray Sandiford will be in action tonight.

Jordan will oppose Jonathan Gonzalez of Puerto Rico in a 51kg encounter while Sandiford will oppose Guatemala’s Juan Reyes in a 56kg bout.

Meanwhile, in taekwondo, Guyana’s Farhaad Bacchus lost 17-2 to Janga Leonard of Aruba in a men’s under 54kg class round of 16 bout.

The hopes for a medal in taekwondo now rests with David Rajjab who will be in action today against Jose Silverio of the Dominican Republic in a round of 16 men’s under 80kg bout.

The table tennis players yesterday continued their quest for medals as the singles competition got underway.

The biggest victory of the day came from Michelle John who defeated Puerto Rico’s  Jessica Marrero 11-9, 11-9, 11-7. John later added the scalp of Jamaica’s Kristen Mc Kenzie winning 11-5, 11-7, 11-3 to be almost assured of qualifying for the next round.

In other results Natalie Cummings lost to Eva Brito of the Dominican Republic 5-11,8-11,6-11  but edged Sabrina Worrell of Jamaica 11-9, 9-11, 7-11, 11-4, 13-11 in her two group matches while Trenace Lowe lost to Natalia Bedoya 6-11, 6-11, 10-12 in her first group match but rebounded to defeat Jamaica’s Ashli Alexander 12-10, 11-6, 11-2

Idi Lewis lost to Marcos Madrid 2-11, 2-11, 10-12 and will play Panama’s Omer Avi Tal where a win will see him advancing to the next round.

Paul David defeated Edilberto Merino 11-4, 11-3, 11-6 and will face Anderson Carrington of Barbados today where a win should see him also advancing out of his group.

Christopher Franklyn the other Guyanese racquet wielder lost to Samuel Galvez 8-11, 11-2, 5-11, 4-11.

Franklyn is down to play Curtis Humphreys today.
