The President’s/Jefford Track & Field Classic is being held in memory of former national athlete Elton Jefford, who died on October 29, 2008 at age 48. Customer Services Representative of E-Networks Leisa Waddell indicated that the company was proud to be associated with the meet and more importantly with the development of sport and young people in the country.  She noted also that the company will pledge its support to the event, which is likely to become an annual one.  President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) Colin Boyce in response said that he was appreciative of the donation, especially since the sport has found it somewhat difficult to procure sponsorship from the corporate community. He also urged that other business entities come out and support the sport because this is one of the most important ways for athletics  to develop. Meanwhile, Coordinator of the President’s/Jefford Track & Field Classic Edison Jefford, son of the late Elton Jefford, thanked E-Networks for its largesse and revealed that invitational letters were sent to all clubs. He said that while the technical committee and organisers have not yet received responses to the invitation he is sure that they will all respond favourably.

The winning club will receive $300,000 while second, third and fourth places will collect $200,000, $100,000 and $50,000 respectively.  Meanwhile,  mobile telephone company  Digicel has committed to the first and second place prize monies and the company will be making a presentation at a later date.
