Lady Jags move into final preparation

The Guyana Women’s National Senior Football team (Lady Jags) will begin their final preparation ahead of the CONCACAF Gold Cup finals to be held in Cancun, Mexico from October 28 to November 8 this year.

The Lady Jags became the first Guyanese team, men or women’s to qualify for the CONCACAF Gold cup finals which is also a qualification tournament for the FIFA Women’s Football Finals to be held in Germany in June 2011.

The Lady Jags team are aiming to be number one at the CONCACAF Gold Cup finals.

Guyana are in Group A along with Mexico, Canada and Trinidad and Tobago.
Group B will have United States, Costa Rica, Haiti and Guatemala.
The top two teams of each group will then play in the semi-finals and final of the Gold Cup with the finalists qualifying for Germany.

The third placed team will meet a team from Europe for a possible third CONCACAF team qualifying for Germany.

The Lady Jags created a stir in the Caribbean when they played
in World Cup qualifiers this year ending with a record of six wins and two losses (to Trinidad and Tobago and Cuba).

However, they convincingly avenged the defeat by Cuba one week later in Guyana with a 3-1 win to qualify for the Gold Cup finals.

The team, comprising of a few college players based in the USA and Canada, will see the Toronto-based players starting training sessions at the high profile ANB Futbol Academy under the guidance of Academy Director Bassam Naim, a Brazilian and North American licensed coach.

The 24 players invited to camp include Alisa Leila, Alison Heydorn, Ashlee Savona, Ashley Rodrigues, Briana De Souza, Brittany Persaud, Catherine Kobelka, Collette Hope, Daria Owen, Donna Carvalhal, Elysia Persaud, Jordana Phillips, Justine Rodrigues, Kayla De Souza, Mariam El-Masri, Nikkitta Persaud, Olivia Gonsalves, Ronette Cort, Shondel Archer, Tenyka Francique, Monique Sylvester, Chantal Lynch, Melissia Elie, Roseanna George, Satara Murray, Karina Moore and Tessa Edwards.
