Shivani Persaud shines in Popeye’s novices’ tennis tourney

Shivani Persaud continued to shine as she again registered an unblemished day to take the title of the 12 and under novices’ category of the Popeye’s Novice/Intermediate Tennis Tournament held on Sunday at the National Park.

The matches for the tournament were arranged via compass draw format where participants from Saturday used their standings to gain spots in the draw then new participants were added to the draw.

With a grand finale win against Heimraj Resaul, Persaud opened with a 4 – 0, 4 – 1 win against Duquan Allen in the semi-finals. Resaul had advanced to the finals following his 4 -1, 4 – 0 triumph over Ryanna Bentick. Bentick had been relegated to fourth place after Allen defeated her in the third place playoff.

In the fifth place playoff, Linden Lewis took fifth place after he subdued Rebecca Bailey to the sixth place.

In the 18 and under intermediate category, Judah Stephney continued his excellent streak to clinch the title. On his road to victory he defeated Realla Bruton, Vishal Persaud and ended with ultimate success over Alexander Brassington in the finals. Brassington, in his pursuit of the title had defeated Saeed Gopie and Rejan McKay, before being stopped by Stephney 4-1 in the finals. Vishal Persaud defeated McKay to finish third in the category while Maria Brassington finished fifth.

The participants all received medals for their enthusiastic participation and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. The Dynamos Sports Club also extends gratitude to Popeye’s for sponsoring the tournament and the National Parks Commission for facilitating it. The Club is also grateful to parents and players for participating in its first event of the year.
