Hunte’s death has left a vacuum

The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) has joined several others in expressing profound sadness at the sudden death of the former chairman of the National Junior Selection Committee Lennox Hunte.

According to a press release, the board has extended deepest sympathies to his family, especially his only daughter Nikesha and members of the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) with the hope that God would guide them through these dark moments.

“Without doubt, the death of Mr Hunte left a big vacuum in the administration of cricket in Guyana and he would be greatly missed,” the release said.

Hunte, former vice-president of the DCC, died at 20:00 hrs on Wednesday at the Georgetown Public Hospital at age 63 after being in the hospital since Monday.

The release referred to Hunte’s honesty, commitment, discipline and willingness which played a vital role “in an era where Guyana dominated youth cricket.

“As an administrator his passion for the game was without doubt formed by his involvement as a cricketer in his younger days,” the release noted.

“He was greatly respected by cricketers and administrators for his knowledge of the game, his approachable ways and his ability to view criticism as friendly advice. With the administration of Guyana’s cricket at an all time low, we can ill afford to lose an outstanding administrator of the ilk of Lennox Hunte.”

The BCB said further that it would like to urge the Demerara Cricket Board and the Guyana Cricket Board to honour the memory of Lennox Hunte by naming one of the national cricketing awards after him.

The BCB, according to the release, will be looking to honour the memory of Lennox Hunte in a special way in the near future.
